The Power of Being Real: A Leadership Lesson I'll Never Forget

James Lord

You can learn leadership lessons in the most unexpected places. One of the most powerful lessons about authentic leadership I ever witnessed happened at a retirement party, of all places. It was a moment that perfectly captured the stark difference between going through the motions and leading from the heart.

A Tale of Two Speeches

Picture this: A retirement celebration for a beloved executive – let's call him Bob – who had given forty years of his life to the company. Bob wasn't just any leader. He was the kind of person who made everyone around him better, whose very presence raised performance standards because people couldn't bear the thought of letting him down. He was tough, sure, but it was the kind of tough that came from a place of caring – tough love, as they say.

As the celebration unfolded, two senior executives stood up to give speeches. The contrast between them was like night and day, and it taught me everything I needed to know about authentic leadership.

The first speaker, a general manager, spoke straight from the heart. No notes, no prepared script – just genuine stories and memories that had everyone in the room alternating between laughter and thoughtful reflection. You could tell these weren't just rehearsed anecdotes; they were lived experiences. The small details he remembered, the inside jokes he referenced – these were the kinds of things you can't fake. They came from years of authentic connection and genuine care.

Then came the second speaker. Out came the index cards. What followed was a perfectly proper, professionally written speech that felt about as personal as a corporate annual report. Despite having worked with Bob for decades, this leader's words felt distant, detached, and sadly forgettable.

The Shield We Wear

Here's the thing about leadership that nobody tells you: We often hide behind what I call the "professional cape" – that corporate shield we wear to protect ourselves from being too vulnerable, too real, too human. But when we do this, we miss the whole point of leadership.

True leadership isn't about perfection. It's not about reading the right words from a script or maintaining a flawless professional facade. It's about connection. It's about being real enough that people can relate to you, trust you, and want to follow you.

Speaking from the Heart

Want to know the secret to connecting with people? Speak from the heart. Yes, you might stumble over your words sometimes. Yes, you might not sound as polished as if you were reading from a script. But here's what I've learned: When you're authentic, and you're truly connecting with your audience, people aren't focusing on your minor verbal stumbles or imperfect word choices.

Instead, they're caught up in the energy of the moment. They're engaged with your message. They're connecting with you as a human being, not just as a title or position.

The Authenticity Test

Here's a simple way to know if you're being authentic as a leader:

- When you speak, are people watching you, or are they engaged with your message?

- Do your team members share their real challenges with you, or just their polished progress reports?

- Can you recall the small, human moments with your team or just the project milestones?

- Do you know what matters to your people beyond their job descriptions?

The Cost of Inauthenticity

The price of maintaining a purely professional facade is steep. It costs us the ability to form real connections, inspire genuine loyalty, and create the kind of impact that people remember long after we've moved on. Just like that second speaker at Bob's retirement party, we risk having years of shared experience amount to nothing more than a few dry sentences read from an index card.

The Choice Is Yours

Every day, we choose what kind of leader we want to be. We can choose to hide behind our professional cape, keeping everything safe, scripted, and superficial. Or we can choose to be real – to lead with authenticity, to speak from the heart, and to create the kind of connections that turn colleagues into collaborators and teams into communities.

Remember, people don't follow titles – they follow people they trust. And trust isn't built on perfection; it's built on authenticity. So, the next time you have the chance to make an impact, put down the script. Speak from the heart. Be real. Be you.

Because, at the end of the day, that's what real leadership is all about.
